Procrastination

“Procrastination is the thief of time.”

I’ve always loved this quote. I like the word ‘procrastinate’. I remember hearing the quote from my Dad as a teen. The other quotes being, “the devil makes work for evil hands” and “time and tide wait for no (wo)man”.

I’ve been procrastinating about publishing my book. Am I experiencing ‘writers block’? It’s a funny feeling in my tummy that’s holding me back. Why? I’m not sure.

Is it fear of failure? I’m normally one to take a risk, to try anything at least once. I’ve failed and got up, and failed … and got back up … etc. etc. Many of us do so time and again. It’s what makes us stronger, I think.

Mmmmm I did press ‘publish’ and received a proof of the book. But it is not in a shape for public consumption. The title page is on the wrong side. There’s a number of typos, some grammatical errors, page breaks and paragraph breaks where they shouldn’t be. I’ve tidied them up and I’m sure I’ve only to make up the pdf and it’s ready to upload and publish. I’ve had encouragement from various people to go with what I have. That it doesn’t have to be perfect. I’ve had a video editor who works for an HR magazine contact me …

But then I feel there’s another paragraph to add. I’ve had an experience of losing a young client who sadly passed away. It’s by no means straightforward when employees are involved. Are left behind. The term for termination of their services is frustration of contract. Our clients funds have been frozen. When will the care staff get paid? When will others be paid.

Besides dealing with termination and pay, which are the cold, hard facts, it’s such a sensitive time for the family. For the carers who have been a part of the family, many of them for years.

This is one part of my job that is difficult. That pulls at my heartstrings.

I’m using this as my reason for procrastinating. There are so many reasons why we procrastinate. There are many excuses we make for not getting a job done.

But I know I shall complete what I started.

I will complete what I start.

My song for this evening is Spanish Harlem by Ben E King on YouTube. Nothing at all to do with the content of this blog, or course! But it’s a song that I’ve loved for ages and this version I especially like. Hope you do too.

Watch “Peggy Lee :: Sweet Happy Life” on YouTube

Hello! I was searching for music for a blog and came across Peggy Lee’s “Sweet Happy Life”. Oh what a sweet song it is … so I decided to save it to use in another blog.

Because I searched through the WordPress site, it was popped into a blog post. Instead of leaving it to wait for specific writings, I guess it would be great to give you a blog with just some music – so here you go. And the video is cute too!

And I’ve copied the lyrics to match should you want to sing-along.

Enjoy your evening.

Sweet Happy Life

Peggy Lee

My wish for you, sweet happy life
May all the days of the year that you live be laughing days
With all my heart, sweet happy life
And may the night times that follow the days be dancing nights

Stars for your smile
Moons for your hair
And someone’s wonderful love
For your loving heart to share

My wish for you, sweet happy life
May all your sorrows be gone and your heart begin to sing
And if a wish can make it be
I wish you spend everyday of your happy life with me

Sweet happy life
Sweet happy life

On a Silver Platter

That’s what we do. We just give it away … on no less than a silver platter. In fact many of us do. And I’m as guilty as any.

Games and quizzes

I see a post on my friend’s profile. Interesting. I wonder if mine will be the same? “Let me have a go. Won’t take long.” Giggle!

It’s a quizz. Favourite colour. Pet’s name. Likes and dislikes. The answer? “Dangerous when crossed”, not so flattering, I can try again!

Then there’s the Horoscopes, I love them. Day of birth, month, year, easy enough and hey presto … my future is laid out before me … love, hates, highs and lows. I read it intently. Mmmm how true, in general terms. To get a detailed reading, I’ve got to give away more information. That’s when I stop.

I am gullible. I just give away my private information at a touch of an icon. Someone, somewhere has built up my profile. They know my name, date of birth, place of birth, where I went to school and college, where I work, my address, my favourite colour, my pets name, my phone numbers, my email addresses, my family and friends names, what social media platforms I use, my car, nationality, what I like and dislike. And I still feed them with more.

“Alexa, tell me where…” I don’t have an Alexa, but if I did of course she’d be providing more and more information, and saving my habits in her memory.

Social media

You can link Whatsapp to Facebook to Instagram and there’s more history being collated, add the many websites we visit and allow our activity to be tracked. How many times do I simply ‘Agree’ when The Google presents me with their terms? How many times do I read those terms? Not once. There’s so much to read, I doubt many of us have read it all, unless you’re a legal whose job it is to do so.

Ancestry

Now ancestry websites is another way we share our information. We are finding our long lost relatives in ways that we’ve never done before. And I can see the resemblance to my immediate family in people I’ve met through ancestry websites. We are spread all over the world and the world, in that well-used cliché, is getting smaller.

Have you had your DNA analysed? It’s much easier these days to find next of kin. Easy, but time-consuming. We’ve found that over half of our DNA is from South and North India. This surprised our family. However, it makes sense because we know that one of our great great great great (maybe even more greats) grandmother was a slave on the beautiful and remote island of St Helena. She landed there along with other slaves by we assume a ship of the Dutch East India Company. We’re still tracing our ancestry to find out from whence she came – possibly India or Malaysia. Could she have been a young girl sold by her family? We need more information. And by my family’s searches, I’m still giving away more of my personal details on a platter. Why? Why would I continue to make it easy for anyone to ‘clone’ me. I think I’m careful, but I’ve been caught out a couple of times.

Cower in the shadows

I’m taking a dig here at our use of social media. But I couldn’t do without this mode of communication. Most people are using the likes of Facebook, even if they cower in the shadows and watch what’s going on without contributing. This is the way we keep up with what’s happening in the world, what’s happening in our country, what’s happening in our community, and even closer, what’s happening in our families and whats happening with our loved ones.

I do admire those who have shied away from using popular platforms. But I’d wager that even those who are not publicly on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and more, are communicating in private on channels like WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, Signal, GoogleMeet, Skype and more. They too are sharing their information in one way or another. How interesting and easier it is to be a private investigator in today’s age.

Learn

Social media is also a fantastic learning station. Choose whatever you fancy learning, and it’s at your finger tips. There’s groups, pages, videos, webinars on any subject under the sun. Learn about gardening, how to programme, learn a language, how to sing or play an instrument.

Find the love of your life on social media, or your missing family member. The Police are active on social media so when you report a missing person their Facebook appeals will bring results. Crimes are short-circuited as more people have home CCTV; and many have cameras on motorcycle and cycle helmets or vehicle dashboards to record events and incidents, and then to share when necessary.

Relationships

We all know what we know and more! It’s quite exciting, in a way. We can find anything, anyone, anywhere at anytime. Who would have thought that’s possible 10 years ago?

Like everything, there is good and bad. At times sharing sensitive or personal information becomes hurtful when it’s about loved ones, and where you’d least expect that information to appear. Many thousands of people can know your personal business even before you or your close family know if someone posts to public platforms without thought. Or, as a friend pointed out, that person may want to be seen to be the first to know. To be seen as the person who has the finger on the pulse. Sharing for sharing sake. News such as births, deaths and marriages must be shared with caution.

Crazy inventors

Technology has moved us forward in leaps and bounds and will continue to do so. I’m ever fascinated by the imaginative minds that make it happen. Minds of very young people must continue to be nurtured and we must take note of their ‘crazy ideas’. As we know, many inventions that were cast aside because the inventor was thought to be insane, have become part of our everyday world.

Thank goodness for the crazy inventors, the mad creatives, the people who are labelled deranged because their imagination and suggestive ideas are poo-pooed, thank goodness for the nurds and the brainboxes. May you long continue to share your craziness. And social media makes it so much easier to do.

Use and enjoy

Enjoy your communicating time … I admit that social platforms have helped me in both my personal and business life. Long may they continue. But we should be cautious … I tell myself.

My song for this blog today is Crazy by Gnarls Barclay. It’s the title that attracted me, but I like the tune too – nice beat. The lyrics? Well I’ll leave it up to you.

Crazy by Gnarls Barclay on YouTube

9 … The Number Nine

Good evening! It’s been a wonderful day

Filled with love and warm wishes

Messages and phone calls.

Food and drink.

Thank you to every one of you.

For making this day so special.

Today’s verse is about the number 9 … I hope you like it.

NINE

The number 9 is a special number

To our family

It’s our family number

Along with number 10.

My husband

My son

And I have our Born Days on No. 9

My daughter’s is No. 10

And then we have 20 for

My daughter-in-law and

My grandson

We saw our grandson at the weekend

“Nana! It’s your birthday first, then it’s mine. So I’ll come to your house and then you can come to my house.”

How cute he is!

Love him to bits.

Another year older

I get teased …

Another year wiser, say I

I’m comfortable with who I am

I’m comfortable with who I have become

I have flaws

I am imperfect

I don’t always listen

I’m impulsive

Or procrastinate

I remember too much

But forgive easily

The list goes on

And on

But it’s okay

I can live with the person I am

Today.

I have been blessed abundantly

With everything I could ever need or want

People who surround me with love

A roof over my head

Food on my table

The means to offer help

Where and when I can

Today, 8 November as I write

Is my Dad’s Born Day

I reminisced about the legacy he left us,

His family.

Not material stuff.

No.

He left me with the knowledge of

The meaning of integrity

How to follow a moral path

To have a strong work ethic

And this work ethic thing

Is actually my Nemises!

I always have another

Project in mind

What’s the next step?

There’s always a next step.

When will I stop?

When I can’t do any more …

When I no longer enjoy what I do

Or when I seek a new or different way

There’s always something to do …

Travel

Write

Paint

Read

Relax

Exercise

Eat

Drink

Enjoy the company

Of friends and family

Enjoy my own company.

I’ll stop when the good Lord

Makes me.

My Dad left me knowing that

If I believe that I can do it

If I put my mind to it

I can accomplish it

It is only me stopping me.

He left me with

A respect for my elders

Love and loyalty to

Family and friends

To be thankful for my riches

Which are

The people in my life

The placês I have haunted

My health.

He taught me the

Difference between

Truth and lies

Knowing that sometimes

A white lie is necessary

But most times the truth prevails

Tô be blunt or pointed when needed

And say it how it is

Whether or not I’m ousted.

My Dad left me with

My sisters and brothers

With aunts and uncles

With cousins, nieces and nephews

With a whole damn family

Of whom there are many

People who mean the world to me.

These are my thoughts

As another year passes me by

Another year beams ahead of me

As I wake and follow the light

For as long as the light shines

In me

With me

Through me

I am who I am

I will be who I am

This is my life

And I love it.

My song for today? Andra Day with Rise Up! Definitely a moving and upbeat song for a special day. If you share this day … I hope you enjoy it too.

Flutter By

I stood at the window
Seeking my past
And saw it flutter by on
Butterfly wings
Stopping just a fraction
To smile at me
Then fluttered away

The past is past
The now is now
I turn from the window
And see that spark
The spark that is me
Lighting up my world
And anyone who
Cares to surround me
And the warmth of
My love
About them

Thank you
For the best times
That have gone by
And thank you for the
Better times
You hold in your hand
To shower on me today
Tomorrow and the days to come.

Blessings to you
My loves
And blessings from me
To you and back to me
Today
Tomorrow and
Always

I stood at the window
Seeking my past
And saw it flutter by on
Butterfly wings.

A New Day

I was inspired by the sunrise on a new day. I awoke and words came to mind.

I had to write.

Good morning to you! Welcome to a brand new day. A brand new month.

Starting again

Head in hands

Eyes closed

Tight

Lips pursed

Tight

Holding on

Tight

Rushing

Round and round

Stop

Stop

Stop

Breathe

A new day

Lift your head

Open your eyes

See the sun shine

Smile your smile

Laugh your laugh

It’s the start

Of a New Day
